John's website for family and friends (that includes you)

Welcome to johnonline

Hello and welcome to my home on the web - thanks for stopping by!

This website is just a personal thing where I play with graphic and web ideas, share photos, blog, and keep family and friends up-to-date with relevant (and not-so relevant) news.

Son.Brother.Uncle.Friend.Boyfriend. Webmaster.Freelancer.GymRat

Wearing many hats is what I do, hopefully none of them shrink in the wash! All of these things, and more, make me who I am and I embrace them all. What kind of hats do you wear?

Why do I have a website? Years ago it was curiosity and excitement sharing pictures of my friends, family, and myself out on the Web. Besides I'm a little bit of an extrovert and that probably explains the rest. Nowadays it has become more of an experimental place where I can teach myself new things and share a little bit of my life with others. For me, it almost seems essential, much like having a real-world home address.

New look

I shaved my head

Last week I finally did something I've wanted to do for a long time - shaved my head! With summer fast approaching I thought it would be the perfect opportunity and, you know what? I'm digging it. The golf gods must dig it too since they blessed me yesterday with my best golf score ever. Despite inclement weather and tornado sirens, I shot a 36 on a par 27 course. I had two pars, five bogeys, and two double bogeys. I wrote about on the blog, it was a very interesting round of golf.

First birdie of 2008

First Birdie 2008

I love golf. I do. But for those that have golfed with me, you know I am a par/bogie/double bogie kind of golfer. When I make a birdie, it's a big deal, and today I made a birdie. Laura and I golfed French Lake after work today and I sunk my Top Flight #4 after two shots on the 7th hole. Birdie! Yes! And you'll be glad to know I improved my score from 49 to 37. This was Laura's first time out this season and she did very well.

49

49

Tax day, April 15th, was my first golf outing of the season. The sun came out and the temperature reached the high 60's. But, hey, who ordered the constant 30 mile per hour wind with gusts up to 40? Par for the course is 29. I scored a healthy 49. In golf, more is not good. Check out my blog for a more detailed account of the day. As a side note, johnonline.net is about to go through a major overhaul for 2008 along with Juicy Designworks. Stay tuned for details.

A surprise on my birthday

Surprise Birthday Party

It was planned to be a casual evening with a couple of buddies, a few drinks, and some games at Dave & Busters. But thanks to an amazing group of friends, a sneaky family, and a couple of resourceful women in my life, I walked into a suprise birthday party in honor of my 40th birthday. I have some great pictures posted in the gallery, as well as a more detailed description of the evening in the blog. It was great!

Welcome, Rowan

Rowan

My friends, Jeff and Jill, welcomed their new son, Rowan, into the world on February 7, 2008. We are very happy the little guy is here! This is the first child for my buddy, Jeff, and he's completely freaking out. Okay, I'm just kidding, he's not freaking out at all. He's very happy and excited to begin this new chapter in their lives. You can read more about this in my official blog, don't 'cha know.

It's time to blog

Blogger

Last summer I updated this website with the intention of adding a blog. I debated on whether to build one from scratch or to use an existing service. Since time has been a factor lately, I've decided to go with the enormously successful and easy-to-use Blogger.com. Laura and I will be using this site to keep you all updated on the latest news, trivia, and ramblings. Best of all, you can share your comments, positive and negative, which is what blogging is really all about. Share in the experience and join the fun!

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas

Christmas is such a great time of year, especially because everyone gets together to spend some time together, catch-up, eat great food, and enjoy the spirit of the holidays. For my parents, it's a chance to visit Minnesota, reconnect with their kids and their charming and irresistible grandchild, Sarah. As always, the time goes by way too fast. We really enjoyed seeing them and eagerly look forward to the next time.

The end of an era

Achieve Healthcare Technologies

The company I've worked for since 1997 has been acquired by a competitor, thus Achieve Healthcare Technologies is no more. Anyone who has ever been part of an acquision understands the uncertainty that goes along with it, and that is what we remaining team members are currently experiencing. I'm choosing to listen carefully and approach changes with an open mind. I'm eager to see what happens next.

I'm running Windows Vista

Microsoft Vista

Back in March 2007 I installed Microsoft Vista Ultimate edition. It satisfied the creativity and image-ready side of my right-brain, but failed miserably when it came to the productive and rational side of my left-brain. I've recently re-adopted Windows Vista as my primary operating system and am in the process of getting everything working the way I want it to. You can read my posts about Windows Vista on my forum.

Golfing at The Quarry

Golfing at The Quarry

Jay, Beth, Laura and I traveled to Giant's Ridge in Biwabik, Minnesota and golfed 'The Quarry'. It's a gorgeous golf course that would challenge anybody that has ever dared play the game of golf. This trip is quickly becoming an annual trip for us and I look forward to it every year. The courses in the cities are great, but they simply can't compare to the courses at Giant's Ridge. Thanks to Jay and Beth for inviting us.

Duran Duran's Red Carpet Massacre

Duran Duran's Red Carpet Massacre

My favorite band of all time, Duran Duran, is releasing a new album in the U.S. on November 13th entitled "Red Carpet Massacre". The band collaborated with the ever popular Justin Timberlake and producer Timbaland and the result is a contemporary sound mixed with the established nuances that make Duran who they are. I've heard a couple of the new tracks and they sound great. I'm looking forward to the new album!

2007 Recognition Event Video

The Bear

The company I work for has an annual recognition event where we celebrate the achievements of team members. Part of this event includes a video which highlights events from the past year and a "bear video", which is centered on a stuffed bear that we have adopted as our unoffical mascot. Click on the picture to the right to view the video. It was fun to make and a blast to watch the reactions of people at the event.

Sitting up

Sitting up

Lisa, Sarah, and mom visited Laura and me on Sunday, August 5th. Sarah was full of new tricks which included rolling over, making lots of noise, and sitting up on her own! Lisa said Sarah's ability to sit up on her own power developed in the past couple of days. Simply amazing, isn't it? Sarah is my gorgeous little neice and she is becoming a big girl every single day. We love her to pieces.

Got my first birdie

My first birdie

On July 4th we celebrate our beloved USA's independence, but now I have another reason to celebrate this day - it's the day I got my first birdie! Laura and I returned to French Lake, the local three par course, to enjoy our holiday by golfing our first full 18 hole-game together this season. On the 15th hole, my drive with my 9-iron came up a bit short and to the right of the green (about 30 yards). With my trusty pitching wedge, I was determined to right the ship and get on the green so I could putt for par. The fates had something else in mind - I sunk the ball from 30 yards out!! My first birdie ever. Sweet.

We made par

We made par!

On Sunday, July 1, 2007 Laura and I went golfing at French Lake, a local three par course, and we both had a par!! Yes, I know this isn't typically big news, but neither Laura nor I had parred a hole in our entire golfing history. We were very excited and happy to have conquered another golfing challenge on our way to mastering the game.
